This project shows members of an emerging generation of art practitioners from Sydney in their habitual environments of home, school and studio. Dispensing with their idolisation and celebration, the work instead draws attention to the subjects' humanity as they animate their everyday spaces.
Formally, the work responds to such films as Minelli's "Home from the Hill", Godard's "Contempt" and Resnais's "Last Year at Marienbad". However, tactically, the aversion of the subject - its literal turning away - defies the tendency to specular (mirror) narcissism in the current media reportage, where viewers are prompted to project themselves onto, and thereby identify with, (over-) publicised celebrity subjects.
